The Adjustment Bureau Review

The Adjustment Bureau is about two lovers and a secretive organization that makes minor “adjustments” to the way that people think.

Screenplay

8.0

The writing for this movie is awesome. I love the concept, and they executed it very well. Matt Damon plays a politician and the speech his character gives towards the beginning of the movie is especially well written. I would be very impressed if a politician gave a similar speech in real life.

Although the writing is noteworthy, the plot twists are not so stellar. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the plot, but I saw each twist and turn coming from a mile away. I can tell that the filmmakers intended to blow my mind, but my mind was left intact and unimpressed by the failed attempt. This is the only reason I did not rate this category higher.

Acting
8.0

There are no moments of noticeably weak acting. The acting throughout this movie is solid. However, there also weren’t many moments when the acting made a big impression on me. Sure it’s good, but it’s not particularly memorable.

Style
9.5

I loved the tone of this movie. All of the settings had that sort of old New York City grandeur. Harry (the black bureau agent) always dresses sharply and looks like a badass. Thompson, the old guy, looks like an old school mobster and all of the agents of the bureau dress in a similar style. (see picture towards bottom)

There were not very many special effects, but the ones that were in the movie were pretty cool. I liked the agents’ notebooks a lot.

Genre Comparison
9.0

The Adjustment Bureau falls into genre of action romance. You know, the movies where two people fall in love and then they have to escape from an army of bad guys. These movies tend to be cheesy and lame, but The Adjustment Bureau was not. It was more romantic and less flirty than most movies in the genre, but its serious nature complemented the general style of the movie.

Originality
7.5

The concept of this movie was really original. It did remind me of The Matrix and Wanted a little bit though. It’s hard to describe without spoiling the movie, but you’ll see what I mean when you see it.

Message
7.0

The message of this movie was basically, “Write your own destiny.” It did a very good job of expressing this message, but the message itself was far from original. Lets just say it’s been done before a few times.

Huevos Factor
8.5

The Adjustment Bureau has great acting, great writing, and very original concept. It brings everything together beautifully. I highly recommend watching this movie while it is still in theaters.

The Adjustment Bureau is now playing in theaters.
